Real music, made for the smallest hands on your playground
Young children reach for sound before they can read a note. The Chickadee Chime Panel gives them a real instrument built for that reach. A smaller, angled version of our Freestanding Chime Panel, it lowers the chimes into range for toddlers and preschoolers so they can strike each bar cleanly and hear what they made. The chimes are tuned to a pentatonic scale, which means every note sounds good next to every other note. There are no wrong keys and nothing sour to play. A child who can barely walk can still make music that a teacher, a parent, and the child are all happy to hear.
What children learn while they play
The panel is quietly doing developmental work while it looks like pure fun. Striking a specific chime and hearing a specific note is a clear lesson in cause and effect — this action makes that sound, every time. Aiming the mallet at a narrow bar builds hand-eye coordination and fine motor control, skills the same children will later use to hold a pencil and cut with scissors. Repeating a pattern and then changing it introduces the idea that musical notes can be arranged to create something new. And because the panel accommodates one to two children at a time, it becomes a natural place to practice sharing and taking turns with the two tethered mallets—a small, daily rehearsal of patience and cooperation that early childhood educators work on all year.
The lightweight mallet is easy for little arms to swing and stays connected to the frame by a cable, so it does not wander off, get dropped in the mulch, or go missing before the next group arrives.
Put it where you need it
The Chickadee Chime Panel works two ways. Choose the in-ground installation for permanent anchoring on the playground, or choose the portable base for mobility. Bring it indoors on a rainy day, move it between classrooms, or reposition it as your space changes, useful for programs sharing a room or planning around the weather. Measuring 24″ x 24″ x 36″ and weighing about 40 pounds, it fits comfortably into a music corner, a sensory area, or an outdoor classroom.
Built to last, priced for the long run
Administrators buy playground equipment once and live with it for years, so durability is a budget question as much as a safety one. The Chickadee Chime Panel is built with RSP (Recycled Structural Plastic) posts and framing, recycled post-consumer HDPE panels, stainless steel hardware, and anodized aluminum chimes. RSP does not rot, splinter, or need repainting the way wood does. It stands up to sun, rain, and constant handling by small children, which means fewer repairs and replacements and a lower total cost of ownership over the life of the equipment. The recycled content also supports the sustainability goals many programs now report on. Every Chickadee Chime Panel is ADA accessible and made in the USA, and it meets IPEMA, CPSC, ASTM, CSA, and ADAAG safety standards.
Free chimes-and-sounds lesson plans are available for Pre-K through Grade 5, so your staff can turn free-play music into a guided activity whenever they like. The Chickadee Chime Panel promotes a love of music for every child — and gives you a rugged, low-maintenance instrument you can count on season after season.
