The Hero Series: Play That Honors the Helpers Next Door

Ask a child to describe a hero, and you’ll often hear about bulging muscles and a cape. That’s the version found in comic books and movies. The Hero Series from Nature of Early Play points young children toward a truer picture: the real heroes are the people Mister Rogers called “the helpers”—neighbors who serve their community when they’re needed most.

The collection’s first structure is the Hero Engine 5-5-5-5, a realistic fire truck playset built for preschoolers ages 2 to 5. It’s dedicated to Welles Crowther, a volunteer firefighter who guided at least 18 people to safety in the World Trade Center on September 11 before losing his own life. The code 5-5-5-5 honors all firefighters who have made that ultimate sacrifice. Programs can request customized text to recognize their own local heroes.

Children climb aboard “Big Red” through open doorways or up the rear ladder, take the wheel behind a polycarbonate windshield, ring a real brass bell, work movable gauges, and rush down the slide into action. Every detail invites the open-ended, imagination-driven play that early childhood development depends on.

The Hero Series is designed to do two things at once. First, it gives children a structure that fuels role-play, cooperation, and physical activity. Second, it connects that play to a simple, lasting idea: heroes aren’t found only on a screen—they’re the firefighters, first responders, and ordinary people who step forward and do the right thing. As children pretend to answer the call, they begin to see service as something they can grow up to do themselves.

That’s the goal of the Hero Series: real play that points toward real heroes.
